And when you’ve got something people love, you stick to it. Such is the case with the classic Ukrop’s celebration cake, a recipe that has largely stayed same the since we started making them over 40 years ago: delicious in flavor, simple in presentation, rectangle or rounded in shape.

Our cake bakery looks more like an artist’s studio – an imaginative, colorful space where more than 240,000 cakes are hand-made each year.

Our bakers and cake decorators love what they do, and are trained and talented in the fine art of cake-making. In fact, the colorful section of our bakery dedicated to cakes looks less like a bakery and more like an art studio. Among our custom cake offerings:

A Ukrop’s cake history

Ukrop’s famous cakes began with the purchase of Dot’s Pastry Shop, one of Richmond’s most loved bakeries from the 1950s. On Christmas Eve 1975, Bobby Ukrop (then running Ukrop’s Super Markets with brother Jim) got wind that the bakery was looking for a buyer from his wife Jayne. So he went down that night to talk to the owners, Charles and Dorthy “Dot” Robinson.

Christmas dinner at the Ukrop house was spent talking about purchasing Dot’s, and the deal was done over summer ’76. And Dot’s decades-old recipes are still used today in Ukrop’s traditional decorated cakes.
